When two fixed objects line up, you are somewhere on the line through them. That gives an accurate position line with no compass error.

Transits are used to check compass deviation, to stay on a safe line into harbour, and at anchor: if a transit you noted changes, the anchor is dragging.

Is a transit the same as leading marks?

Leading marks are transits set up deliberately to show a safe track. Any two charted objects in line make a transit.

How do I use a transit to check for a dragging anchor?

Pick two objects on shore in line when you anchor. If they move out of line, the boat has moved.
