The race

The race is run by the RORC with the Antigua Yacht Club. It's a non-stop sprint past islands such as Barbuda, St Kitts, Nevis, St Barth, Saba and Guadeloupe, with many corners, so navigation and sail changes matter as much as speed. Several boats are returning under new names, and early expressions of interest include big multihulls.

Entry is through the Notice of Race on SailRaceHQ, with more information at caribbean600.rorc.org.

Why sailors love the Caribbean 600

Since the first race in 2009, the RORC Caribbean 600 has become one of the most popular offshore races in the world: warm trade winds, steady 15 to 20 knot breezes, flat water in the lee of islands and short, punchy legs. With so many corners it demands constant sail changes and sharp navigation, and the fleet ranges from 100-foot maxis and racing trimarans to Class40s and well-sailed cruisers.

Antigua Sailing Week and the season

Antigua sits at the centre of the Caribbean racing calendar. Many boats sail across the Atlantic in the ARC or independently in late autumn, race the Caribbean 600 in February, and stay for Antigua Sailing Week in late April or early May. English Harbour, with Nelson's Dockyard, is one of the Caribbean's most historic anchorages.

Getting a berth

Many boats take paying or volunteer crew for the race and delivery legs. You'll be more valuable with a sea survival course, offshore experience, and confident night sailing and man overboard skills. Crew-finding sites and RORC events are good places to start.
