Haubans in practice

Shrouds are the side stays of the standing rigging. Cap shrouds run from the masthead over the spreaders to the chainplates on deck; lower shrouds run from lower on the mast. Together they hold the mast straight athwartships.

Check shrouds regularly for broken strands, especially at the swaged ends, and keep split pins taped so they don't tear sails or skin.

Common questions

What should you do if a shroud breaks?
Tack immediately so the broken side becomes the leeward side and the mast load comes off it. Then rig a halyard to the chainplate as a temporary shroud.
How often should shrouds be replaced?
Many riggers and insurers suggest every 10 to 15 years for stainless wire, sooner after hard offshore use.
