DR in practice

A DR position is the simplest estimate of where you are: plot the course steered and the distance run from the last fix. It does not allow for tidal stream or leeway.

On an RYA chart, a DR is marked with a short line across the track and the time.

What is the difference between DR and EP?

An EP (estimated position) adds tidal stream and leeway to the DR.

When is DR used today?

As a check on GPS and as a fallback if electronics fail. It is part of Day Skipper and Yachtmaster theory.
