Regala in practice

The gunwale (pronounced 'gunnel') is the top edge of the hull where it meets the deck. On small boats it is often a rail you can grab or sit on.

'Gunwale under' or 'rail down' means the boat is heeling so far that the deck edge is in the water, usually a sign it is time to reef.

Common questions

How do you pronounce gunwale?
'Gunnel'. The name comes from the plank that once supported a ship's guns.
What is a toe rail?
A low raised strip along the gunwale of a yacht that stops feet slipping overboard and gives fittings something to attach to.
