Sailing
Frottement
Définition
Usure causée par la friction : cordage contre cordage, coque ou ferrures. Prévenir avec des protège-cordages et une inspection régulière.
Frottement in practice
Chafe is the slow wearing-through of rope, sail or hull where it rubs against something. A mooring line rubbing on a fairlead can part in a single night of swell, so check lines regularly.
Common protection: plastic tube or leather around mooring lines where they pass through fairleads, spreader patches on sails, and moving the rub point by adjusting a line a few centimetres.
Common questions
- Where does chafe usually happen on a yacht?
- Mooring lines at fairleads, anchor rodes at the bow roller, sheets on stanchions, and sails on spreaders and shrouds.
- How do you protect a mooring line from chafe?
- Slip a length of hose or a purpose-made chafe guard over the line where it touches the fairlead or the quay edge.
