Prendre un ris
Définition
Réduire la surface de voilure par vent fort en fixant une partie de la voile avec des ris ou une ligne de ris.
Prendre un ris in practice
Reefing reduces sail area so the boat heels less and is easier to control. A mainsail usually has two or three reefs; slab reefing pulls a lower section down to the boom.
The old sailors' rule is that the time to reef is when you first think about it. It is much easier to shake out a reef than to put one in once the wind has built.
Common questions
- À quelle force du vent faut-il prendre un ris ?
- It varies by boat, but many cruising yachts take a first reef at about 15 to 18 knots apparent wind upwind.
- How do you reef while sailing?
- Ease the mainsheet, take the weight on the topping lift, lower the halyard to the reef mark, secure the tack, tension the reef line, and rehoist.
