Altura libre

Definición

Altura del punto más alto del buque, normalmente el tope del palo, por encima de la línea de flotación. Se compara con el galibo de puentes y cables eléctricos.

Altura libre in practice

Air draught is the vessel's height above the water. Bridge clearances on charts are given above Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT), so the real clearance is usually more than charted.

Clearance under a bridge = charted clearance + (HAT − height of tide). Allow a safety margin for antennas, wind instruments and waves.

Common questions

Where can I find my boat's air draught?
In the manufacturer's specifications. Add any masthead instruments, antenna or wind vane.
Are overhead power cables dangerous?
Yes. Electricity can arc across a gap, so charted safe clearances must be respected.
