Day Skipper Theory: Online vs Classroom — Which Is Better?

Published · Last checked October 2026

Both routes lead to the same RYA Day Skipper theory certificate. Online courses are flexible and self-paced, good if you are disciplined and busy. Classroom courses, either an intensive week or weekly evenings, give you an instructor to ask, hands-on chartwork help and classmates to learn with. The syllabus is about 40 hours either way.

Whichever you choose

  • Practise chartwork on paper with a training chart and plotter: tidal heights and course to steer take repetition.
  • Learn the rules of the road and lights until they are automatic.
  • Use practice exams to find weak topics before the real papers.
