Privacy Policy
The short version
learntosail has no accounts and we don't collect personal data ourselves. Your lessons, progress and logbook stay in your own browser. The site shows adverts served by Google AdSense, described below.
No account needed
You never sign up or log in. Every lesson, tool and game works without giving us your name, email or anything else.
What is stored, and where
To remember your progress, the site saves a few small items in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device and are never sent to us:
- Learning progress: lessons completed, quiz and exam results.
- Logbook: the sea time and passages you record.
- Preferences: whether sound effects are muted, whether the mascot is minimised, and that you've seen the privacy notice.
Logbook exports (CSV) are created on your device and saved wherever you choose. We never receive a copy.
Advertising and cookies
We set no cookies of our own. To count visits and measure page speed we use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device and does not track you across sites or build a profile of you; it records the page viewed, the referring site, your browser type and approximate country, and timing data. Adverts are provided by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show ads based on your visits to this and other sites, and to measure them. Where the law requires it, you are asked for consent before personalised ads are shown, and you can change your choice at any time. You can turn off personalised ads in Google's ad settings, and read how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Embedded tools on other sites (under /embed) show no adverts.
If you buy an advert on this site, your email address and payment details are collected and processed by Stripe, our payment provider. We never see or store your card details.
Hosting
The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic request details (such as browser type and the page requested) to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. We don't use this information to identify or profile you. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for how it handles this data.
External links
Lessons link to other sites, such as the RYA, GOV.UK and Wikimedia Commons. Those sites have their own privacy policies, which apply once you follow a link.
Your control
Because your data lives only in your browser, you're fully in control of it. Clearing this site's data in your browser settings deletes your progress, logbook and preferences permanently. We can't recover them, because we never had them. Export your logbook first if you want to keep it.
